Nepal Expedition: Summit Yala Peak (5,500m) and Trek the Langtang Valley

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu and meet with your guides and group at the hotel. You’re free to explore the city, try some local food and stock up on any last-minute snacks.

Day 2: Get your podcasts and playlists ready! Today is a 7-hour drive to Syabrubesi, which is the starting point for our trek. It’s a long day in the bus, but the views of the mountains, valleys and rivers are beautiful.

Day 3: Our first day of walking begins. We’ll pass through forests and cross bridges over rivers. If we’re lucky we might even spot a red panda. We’ll overnight at the Lama Teahouse. Distance: 14km, 1,000m of ascent.

Day 4: We continue through wild forests with hemlock, oak and giant rhododendron. You’ll start to spot mountains in the distance. Before reaching Langtang Village, we pass through the Ghodatabela army checkpoint. Distance: 11km, 1200 m of ascent.

Day 5: Welcome to yak country! This is a shorter day, but you might start to feel the altitude. We pass through yak pastures and the Langtang mountain range come into view. We arrive in Kyanjin Gompa, our base for the next two nights. Distance: 7 km, 450m of ascent.

Day 6: Today is an acclimatisation day. You can explore the local monastery, cheese factory or hike up to a moraine for a closer look at Langtang Lirung. If you’re into a more active day, you can join your guide up Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) for a breathtaking view of the Langtangs off the beaten path. Distance: Optional 10km, with 950 m of ascent.

Day 7: Today, we walk along a rocky glacial trail to base camp at 4,600m. We’ll arrive at mid-afternoon with plenty of time to relax with a hot drink and admire the views. Distance: 10km with 780m of ascent

Day 8: It’s Summit day! We’ll set off early and make our way under the glow of head torches. The last 700m of the summit push generally requires ropes, crampons and ice axes. After making our way along a small ridge, we reach Yala Peak at 5,500m. After the summit, we descend to base camp for a bite to eat before continuing to Kyanjin Gompa. Distance: 16km with 1,000m of ascent and 1,200m of descent.

Day 9: A big day of walking down to Lama Teahouse, where we’ll celebrate with a beer. Distance: 18km, 1,400m of descent.

Day 10: We wave the mountains goodbye and return to the lush forest. We’re retracing our steps down to Syabrubesi, where we’ll spend the final night before returning to the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu. Distance: 11km, 900m of descent.

Day 11: We’re back on the bus toward Kathmandu and can start looking forward to a hot shower in the hotel. We’ll celebrate with a group meal and probably a few drinks.

Day 12: Enjoy your final day in Nepal before heading to the airport.

Frequently asked questions

Who is running the trip? This trip is run by Connor (founder of Atlas Mountaineering) with support from trusted local agents and guides.

What’s the accommodation like? You’ll have two nights in a hotel at the start and end of the trip and the majority of nights are spent in tea houses. We’ll have a single night before the summit push in tents. These are generally twin rooms (depending on the tea house).

How hard is it? This is a physically demanding trip, so a good level of fitness and stamina is necessary. We spend several days walking above 3,000m, where you’ll feel the altitude. You do not need previous mountaineering or climbing experience as the summit is non-technical. We will teach you how to use crampons and ice axes for this, and your guides will keep you roped up for the final section.

What will I carry? We’ll have porters carrying your main kit (up to 20-25kg). So you will only need to carry a daypack with essentials. What do I need to bring? You will be sent a full kit list. You need to bring a sleeping bag, climbing equipment (harness, helmet, crampons, boots, walking axe) and winter gear for sub-zero temperatures.

What’s the weather like? It’s nice during the day (10-20°C), dropping below freezing overnight and of course getting cooler as we trek higher. It might snow higher up.
